FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What qualifications do I need to obtain a contractor’s license and what are the requirements?

You must have at least 4 years of journey-level experience, within the last ten, in the trade you are applying for. You will need to have a certifier to verify your claimed experience. Other requirements include passing the required exams (law and trade), passing a background check, bonding, and worker’s compensation if you will have employees.

There are very few options for a waiver of the exam. If you have been licensed in a reciprocal State for the previous five years, you may be able to waive the trade exam. The CSLB will allow for a waiver of both exams if you’ve been listed as an officer/member/manager on a contractor’s license for over five years. Another waiver option is if you are already licensed and are looking to add a classification to your license that is closely related to the license you currently hold.

No, you are not permitted to “borrow” a license, work under someone else’s license unless you are properly employed, or let someone else use your license.
The time frame greatly depends on the Licensing Board’s processing times at any given time, whether exams are required, and background check results. However, you can estimate between 2-3 months.
